Statewide Advisory Board Meeting

Monday, January 3, 1994 Room 1F-51, A.I. duPont Institute, 9:30 am Open to the public. Statewide Advisory Board members will meet to discuss current activities and policies relative to the Delaware Assistive Technology Initiative.

Physical Disabilities Primer

Friday, January 28, 1994 A.I. duPont Institute, Third Floor Lecture Hall 9:30 am - 4:00 pm

Prominent physicians from several departments of the A.I. duPont Institute will present basic information about a variety of physical disabilities. Causes, characteristics, prognoses, and treatments of disabilities such as cerebral palsy, hearing disorders, neurological problems, muscular dystrophy and atrophy, spinal cord injuries, and growth disorders will be featured. Registration is free, but required. Lunch included.

Up With Kids Expo

March 12-13, 1994 Christiana Mall, Christiana, Delaware Delaware's largest annual event focusing on kids' products, services, and accomplishments. Presented by the Delaware Committee for UNICEF and sponsored by the A.I. duPont Institute.

Computer Access Workshop

presented by Dennis AnsonAssistive Technology Project, Seattle, Washington March 21, 1994, 9:00 - 4:00 pm

John Clayton Conference Center, University of Delaware campus, Newark, DE. Workshop will focus on keyboard adaptations and alternative interfaces for computer access. Registration required. Cost $10. Lunch included.

ADA and Assistive Technology - ADA requirements in assistive technology geared for employers and business owners.

Assistive Devices for the Elderly - discussion of cases and how assistive devices helped to improve hearing, vision, mobility, and daily activities at home or in the community.

Assistive Listening Devices for the Hard of Hearing - discussion of the purpose and use of assistive listening devices in various communication situations.

Assistive Technology in the Nursing Home - discussion of basic needs for assistive technology in the nursing home to improve accessibility and the quality of life for residents. Targeted for nursing home professionals, family members of nursing home residents.

Basic Computer Terminology - basic "computer lingo", especially as it pertains to adaptive computer technology.

Environmental Controls - guest speaker on the basics of environmental control systems and how they operate.

Ergonomic Possibilities for the Workplace- guest speaker to discuss different types of ergonomic keyboards and input technology for people with disabilities. Targeted for VR counselors, professionals, or consumers.

Funding Clinic - question and answer session on funding questions or problems for consumers or professionals.

Funding: EPSDT vs. Medicaid - basic information on what the EPSDT and Medicaid program is and how it provides coverage for some assistive technology services and devices.

Hands-on Introduction to Augmentative Communication Assessment and Technology - guest speaker to present a general overview with most time spent in small groups looking at technology assessment and solutions for persons with communication disorders. Targeted for professionals.

Intro to the Macintosh - basic orientation and demonstration of the Macintosh computer for parents and professionals.

Mobility Aids for People with Disabilities - guest speaker will discuss and show various types of mobility aids that can be used at home to improve the quality of life.

New Age of Telephone Technology - discussion of basic telecommunications technology and solutions for people who are deaf and hard of hearing.

Open Tour - tour of facility and services. Walk-ins welcome. No registration required.

Proven Adaptations using Assistive Technology in the Community and Workplace - guest speaker will show and discuss problems encountered requiring adaptations and their solutions.

Software for Young Children - basic discussion of software and hands-on lab experience with software. Targeted for parents.

Think Summer Fun: Recreation and Leisure Opportunities using Assistive Technology- guest speaker will review many possible ways that assistive technology can be used to increase enjoyment of life.

Using Daily Living Aids at Home- demonstration and discussion of many types of low-tech devices used in the home to improve the quality of life.

Visual Aids for Children in Schools - guest speaker will discuss various low-tech and high-tech options for children in the schools. Targeted for teachers.

101 Ways to Use Switches - demonstration of the large assortment of switches available and how you can use them to access toys, communication devices, and computers.

Augmentative Communication in the Classroom - introductory to intermediate workshop explaining the ways in which AAC can be used in the classroom to address educational goals and increase students' participation. Both electronic and computer communication devices will be demonstrated.

Computer Access - From single switch to voice recognition. An introductory workshop showing the many ways in which a person with a disability can access the computer and its many applications.

Equalizing Access to Information - overview of information and services available for people with disabilities at the Delaware Division of Libraries. Includes Books on Tape, Descriptive Video, and reading computer.

Fun Stuff on the Mac - for the Mac user who would like to become more efficient and organized using system shortcuts and low cost or even free software to enhance your Mac.

Intro to Mac - introduction to Macintosh for those with no or limited experience. Will show you the basics to get you comfortable with the system.

TDD Workshop - workshop on TDD and other forms of telecommunications for the deaf and hard of hearing and speech impaired.

Toy Workshop II - hands-on workshop to adapt your own toys, make your own switches, junction boxes, and other various items for children with disabilities. Knowledge of soldering would be helpful, but not necessary.

Worksite Modifications - introductory workshop explaining low and high tech methods of adapting the workplace of a person with a disability can help overcome physical limitations and increase productivity.

Sussex County TRC Workshops

Computer Workshops - each Monday and Friday in January, 10-Noon.

Creative Arts Workshop - dancing (wheelchair and otherwise), singing, playing, drawing, painting, acting, or any other creative outlet that appeals to registrants. Location and topic to be determined by interest and number of registrants.

Presentation to Stroke Club - Methodist Church, Race St., Georgetown, January 16, Noon-1 pm. Open to public.

Using AT to Communicate with Non-English Speaking Consumers - basic communication tips for those times when you need to speak with Spanish- or French-speaking consumers. Bring a list of questions and help for providing answers will be given. Throughout February, presentations will be given at various schools throughout the county. Call the TRC to arrange a presentation or find the nearest one to you. Throughout March, TRC staff will be meeting with church organizations to promote advocacy for persons with disabilities. Call the TRC to arrange a meeting at your church or to find one that you can attend.
