Enhancing and Expanding the Use of SpeakEasyTM voice output communication aid

January 10, 1994, 2:30 - 3:30 pm

AbleNet, Inc., manufacturer of the SpeakEasyTM augmentative communication device, is sponsoring this teleconference for teachers, therapists, speech/language pathologists, and families of individuals with vocal disabilities. The teleconference will explore how to begin teaching and using a voice output communication aid, programming tips that will ease the process, the importance of motivating and reinforcing vocabulary, and innovative applications for voice output communication throughout the day. The teleconference will be broadcast at each ATRC and at the Central Site-for more information, call the site nearest you!

Memory and Communication Skills for Dementia

Presentation and discussion of a variety of strategies designed to help individuals with dementia, including patients with Alzheimer's disease, to function better in their daily lives. Dr. Bourgeois will demonstrate portable and personalized memory aids such as memory wallets, memory books, memo boards, and cue cards that help with conversation and memory-related behaviors of people with dementia. No charge. Preregistration requested (see Jan/Feb newsletter, page 3).

How to Make Simple Adaptations - A rehab engineer will show you how to make your own simple adaptations to assistive technology devices. Installation of battery interrupters, switch interrupters, voice output, etc. will be demonstrated.

Intro to IBM PC Upgrades -Rehab engineer Rob Czetli will show you how to install sound cards, cd-rom drives, controller cards, and other upgrades on your computer.

Open Lab - Opportunity for "hands-on" computer hardware and software experience. Reservations required.

Open Tour - Your opportunity to have a guided tour of the center and see some demos of assistive technology.

Dynamic Displays for AAC - A hands-on workshop demonstrating the various features of three dynamic display systems for augmentative communication. Comparisons include Dynavox, System 2000, and Speaking Dynamically. CEU credits available.

Equalizing Access to Information - Libraries change lives and the reason is because they are society's great equalizer between the have and the have-not's. People with disabilities who probably have the greatest need for information have had the least access to it. In this workshop, participants will discover how to coordinate improved access to information and many new ways that are now possible through technology and the ADA. Library credits offered.

The Graphical User Interface(A Macintosh and Windows Comparison) - Why a graphical user interface? Which one is better? How much will I expect to pay? Can I have Macintosh software and Windows on the same computer? What does multi-tasking mean? Find out the answer to all of these questions and many more. Learn the basics of both computers along with advantages and disadvantages of each. This workshop is open to all who wish to attend. CEU credits offered.

Recreation and Leisure Workshop - Like to play cards, but have difficulty seeing them? Or maybe just holding the cards is difficult? Want to play baseball, but are unable to go to the field? Have difficulty playing tic tac toe? The ATRC will demonstrate their many adaptations designed to assist you. Liberating the Power of Minspeak - Two-day seminar given by Nancy Inman, consultant from the Prentke Romich Company, at the Alfred I. duPont Institute, 1600 Rockland Rd., Wilmington, DE.
