Training

Closing the Gap - The 14th Annual Conference builds on a tradition of providing a comprehensive examination of the most current uses of technology by persons with disabilities and the professionals who work with them. Topics will cover a broad spectrum of technology as it is being applied to all disabilities and age groups in education, rehabilitation, vocation, and independent living. International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication - ISAAC `96 - The 7th Biennial Conference will be held at the Vancouver Trade & Convention Centre, Vancouver, B.C., Canada, August 7-10, 1996. New Visions - An introduction to developmental disabilities and to the history of treatment, New Visions also includes a survey of issues surrounding the rights of individuals with disabilities. This six hour seminar, appropriate for support staff, school personnel, individuals with disabilities, or their family members, uses active training techniques to present basic concepts and to promote discussion about current problems and future directions in the support of individuals with disabilities. This is a training partnership with Division of Mental Retardation (DMR) and the University of Delaware University Affiliated Program (UAP). The Mid-Atlantic Regional RESNA Conference, "Connections for Life," will be held on November 8 & 9, 1996, at the Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA. The conference is designed for anyone interested in the practical applications of technology for people with disabilities. There will be two advanced workshops prior to the start of the conference on Friday morning: Cushion Selection for Wheelchair Seating and a Review of Graphical Representation in AAC. The conference will include topics on: Augmentative Communication; Seating & Mobility; Computer Access; Funding; Certification; Transportation; Recreation; Technology Transfer; Virtual Reality; Integration of Powered Mobility and AAC; and Current Policy Issues. New Castle County ATRC Workshops

Computer Access - Come and learn about all the options in using the standard keyboard and the mouse that are available. This workshop will demonstrate that people of all abilities can use the computer. Come and familiarize yourself with the adaptive technologies available, such as Intellikeys, Headmouse, and Dragon Dictate.

Sign Language - This workshop will be held at the Kent County ATRC. Attendees will acquire a functional sign language vocabulary of approximately 250 signs as well as learn about individual considerations when working with individuals who cannot use speech to communicate. Information will be provided on when, why, and how to teach sign language. A brief overview of AAC systems will also be provided. Focus will be primarily on "low tech" systems.

Augmentative Communication: Everything That Talks - One of the most time consuming and difficult aspects of augmentative communication is vocabulary development. This workshop will outline considerations for vocabulary development using actual cases. Participants will be given the opportunity to program a sample abbreviated vocabulary into one of several electronic communication devices. Devices will include the Macaw, Dynavox, System 2000, and Say-It-All.

Computer Basics - The purpose of this workshop is to simplify computer terminology and provide you with the basic information necessary to operate a computer and choose a computer and software to meet your needs.

Delaware non-residents will be charged a fee of $20 (unless otherwise indicated) to attend DATI training activities.
